Mission

  1. To improve the teaching technique by adopting modern teaching methods.
  2. To create Commerce Development Fund in order to provide financial assistance to the needy students.
  3. To provide assistance for plantation of Tea and Agaru within the college campus for income generation.
  4. To initiate special drive by the faculty members in the feeder institutions for increasing the students’ enrolment.

History of the Department

The Department of Commerce of Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College was started in the session 1972-73 with the motto “Transformation of knowledge into Reality”. The department started offering Accountancy as major course from the session 1984-85 and Business Management from the session 1988-89 in order to meet the demand of the students. In the year 1992, the department was brought under deficit grant-in-aid system by the Government of Assam as a separate Stream of the college.

The faculties appointed for running the Commerce stream from its inception were Cheniram Borah, Nurul Islam Borah, Soneswar Borah, Satya Phukon, Inamul Mujid Borah, Anil Kumar Gogoi, Abdul Azim, Ananta Chakraborty, Santanu Thakur, Jyoti Prasad Gogoi, Dipankar Borah, Bichitra Kumar Dutta and Jiban Sarmah. Munin Gogoi, Maniram Lahon and Rupak Dutta also provided the service to the department as part time teacher.

From the session 1992-93, the faculty members namely, Dr. Anil Kumar Gogoi, Abdul Azim, Jyoti Prasad Gogoi, Bichitra Kumar Dutta, Bidyadhar Baruah, Jayanta Gogoi, Tarun Phukan, Debajeet Sarmah, Navanita Bora and Anamika Khound were appointed as permanent teachers. Birinchi Chetia as office assistant and Chandra Gowala as Office Bearer have also been appointed in the commerce stream. Dr. Anil Kumar Gogoi, later on, joined as Principal of the college in the year 2012. Anamika Khound resigned from her service and Dr. Akashjyoti Saikia was appointed against her vacancy. In the year 2020, Bidisha Sarmah, Manisha Buragohain and Rabisankar Gogoi joined the department as Assistant Professors and are serving the department till date.

Departmental Library

The Department of Commerce have a departmental library. It was initiated from the Academic Session 2009-10. It has been maintaining a Stock Register containing 403 numbers of Text and Reference Books. Majority of the books are purchased by the faculty members of the Department. A few books of the Departmental library are also received from different publishers as Specimen copy which are also recorded in the Stock Register. Books are issued to the needy students of each semester including H.S. 1st year and 2nd year as per requirement and availability.  

A Combined Issue Register was maintained up to the Academic Session 2017-18. From the session 2018-19, a Separate Issue Register is being maintained for two semester classes of the same Academic Session. The students return the books after completion of each semester course. After the implementation of CBCS System in 2019-20, sufficient number of text books were not available in the market. The students were then provided with books from the departmental library based on availability.

Departmental Wall Magazine

The Department of Commerce have a departmental wall magazine named ‘Murchana’ where students post their articles, drawings, pictures and other writings to share with each other.  It is used as a medium to express students’ creativity and talent. Students decide a theme every year for the wall magazine and write articles based on the theme and display it. The students of different semesters of the department come forward and put strenuous effort on their part to publish the wall magazine of the department every academic year.
