JHANJI HEMNATH SARMA COLLEGE

NSS UNIT

     National Service Scheme (NSS) is a scheme of Government of India conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for providing opportunities to the students from Class 11th to Post Graduate Level to serve the society. The scheme was launched in 24th September, 1969 by the Government of India on the occasion of celebrating 100th birthday of Nation Father Mahatma Gandhi. The Motto of NSS is "Not me but you"". The student community has been involving to serve the society through different activities of NSS all over the country since its inception.

     The Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College, affiliated to Dibrugarh University, is a rural college situated in Sivasagar district, Assam. With the influence of the motto of NSS, the college established a unit in 1979 for developing the personality of students as a social being and positive contribution towards society. The NSS Unit, jhanji Hemnath Sarma College has been serving to society through different activities since its inception.

     The NSS Unit of the college was formed with 100 volunteers and Kriti Chandra Dutta, Senior Lecturer, Department of Commerce was appointed as the first programme officer of the Unit. Under the leadership of the Programme Officer, numbers of activities like plantation, cleaning programme, road development in rural areas, construction of temporary school walls had been executed nearby areas of the college. In 1983, Mr BireswarNeog, Senior Lecture, Department of Economics appointment as Programme Officer of the Unit of the College. Under his leadership, the Unit involved various social activities in Khonamukh, Vitorual Gaon, Ouguri, Jhanjimukh etc in the district of Sivasagar and Jorhat, Assam. After the completion of his tenure, Mr Bichitra Kr Dutta, Senior Lecturer, Department of Commerce was appointed as Programme Officer. Under his leadership numbers of activities have been conducted in the surrounding areas like Khonamukh, Charing, Bolomia Gaon etc. From 1997, Mr Bidyadhar Boruah, department of Commerce served the duty as Programme Officer of the Unit. A survey programme on birth registration was conducted by the unit which was sponsored by UNICEF during his tenure. Other activities like blood donation camp, plantation programme, cleaning programme, health awareness programme were conducted successfully during this period.

     Due to irregularities in funds from the Government, the activities of the Unit became inactive for few years. In the year 2013, the took initiative to reactive the NSS Unit and appointed Mr BasantaHandique, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science as Programme Officer of the Unit. Since then, special camps and numbers of regular activities have been conducting in the local areas.

2	International Yoga Day	21st June, 2022	Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College	International Yoga Day has been observed in the college under the initiative of the NSS Unit of the College. Ms Divya Dev Sinha was the instructor of Yoga on the occasion. A total of 123 students and 21 teachers participated in the programme.
3	Observation of World Environment Day	5th June, 2022	Aranyam Khetra, Geleki, Sivasagar	In connection with the observation of World Environmental Day, the NSS unit of the college organized a plantation programme at Aranyam Khetra, Geleki as part of MoU signed between college and the NGO - Aranyam . A total of 35 students, 5 local people, 8 teachers, and the principal of Jhanji Hemnath Sarma college participated in the programme.
4	NSS Special Camp	3rd June-9th June, 2022	Deoraja Janata H S School, Sivasagar	A Special Camp was held under the initiative of NSS of the college on the theme “Leadership Quality and Skill Development”. A total of 42 students participated in the programme. The activities related to the programme are: Socio-Economic Survey, Practice Teaching, Awareness of the Environment, Historical Monument, Cleaning Programme, Yoga, and Plantation.
5	Progamme on Yoga	6th April, 2022	Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College	A special training programme on Yoga has been organized by the NSS Unit of the college in relation to the ongoing 6-month certificate course on Yoga. Total of 9 teachers and 33 students participated in the programme.
6	International Women’s Day	8th March, 2022	Sikirisuk, Norakonwar Bailung Gaon	Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College NSS Unit in association with IQAC & Women Cell of the college has organized and observed International Women’s Day at Sikirsukh, Norakonwar Bailung Gaon. Dwijen Dutta, the Health Educator of Sivasagar delivered an awareness speech on health-related issues of women on the occasion. A total of 10 teachers, 20 NSS volunteers, and 25 local women participated in the programme.
7	National Science Day Observation	28th February, 2022	Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College	The College Observes the National Science day with the initiative of NSS unit of the College. A total of 55 students and 10 teachers participated in the programme. Dr Manjit Gogoi, principal of the college and Mrs Noni Rajkhowa delivered their respective speeches on the significance of the day.
8	Awareness Programme on Yoga	19th February, 2022	Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College	An awareness Programme on Yoga has been organized by the NSS Unit of the college. The 6-months Yoga Certificate Course was also introduced from the day. The NSS Unit of the College shall take the initiative for the conduction of the course.
9	Signing of Memorandum of Understanding	9th February, 2022	Aranyam Khetra, Geleky, Sivasagar	Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College signed an MoU with the NGO, Aranyam at Geleki, Sivasagar. Both sides agreed to work together in the field of environmental protection. A plantation Programme was also held on the day at Aranyam Khetra. Total 20 NSS volunteers and 8 no of teachers participated in the programme.
10	National Girl Child Day Observation	24th January, 2022	Sports Ground, Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College	A competition was organized by the NSS Unit of the college among Girl students of college. Mr Jiban Khanikar, General Secretary, Sivasagar District, Tug of War Association joined in the programme. 11	Campus Cleaning Programme	15th December, 2021	Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College	A campus cleaning programme was organised by the NSS Unit to maintain the beauty and hygine of the college campus.
